As an organization dedicated to mentoring urban youth through outdoor education, a major aspect of Big City Mountaineers’ efforts involve volunteers. Volunteers who work with Big City Mountaineers enjoy sharing their love of the outdoors with youth, and are able to make a difference in lives by simply being supportive mentors. Adult volunteer mentors guide youth members in various ways, helping them to recognize the value of their accomplishments.
Big City Mountaineers offers a variety of outdoor programs for youth, each one involving the work of qualified volunteer mentors. The programs offered usually involve activities such as backpacking, canoeing, hiking, camping, and mountain climbing, and may include weeklong expeditions, which take place all over the country, and single day outings, which involve mainly local activities. Volunteers are also needed for non-program activities, such as fundraising, office management, gear management, and special events.
