In June 2015, Hanold Associates LLC, an executive search firm based in Chicago, successfully recruited a new chief human resources officer (CHRO) for outdoor apparel retailer Patagonia. Leading the search, Jason Hanold sought an executive who fit Patagonia’s “stellar and passionate leadership team” and aligned with what he described as its “charitable ethos.” In designing clothing and gear for outdoor athletes such as skiers, surfers, and trail runners, Patagonia places an emphasis on simplicity and utility and uses its resources to aid environmental restoration efforts around the world.
Hanold Associates found the perfect match for Patagonia in Dean Carter. In addition to exhibiting the “authenticity, transparency, grit, and giving nature” described by Jason Hanold as central to Patagonia’s company culture, Mr. Carter offers extensive knowledge of human resources and business leadership. His global experience includes supporting over 220,000 employees as CHRO at Sears Holdings, as well as serving as chairman of the Sears, Roebuck & Co Foundation. He was also instrumental in the international expansion of Fossil Group, supporting more than 8,000 personnel throughout 23 countries over the course of nine years as CHRO.
As Patagonia’s new chief human resources officer, Dean Carter will support the activities of nearly 2,000 Patagonia employees around the world. He will oversee the firm’s human resources, finance, and legal departments and will report directly to CEO Rose Marcario.
