What do athletes after their retirement?

Retirement is something athletes do not take easily. This new period for them in some cases ends in depression because they feel they are useless and being out of competition is just frustrating. This is quite normal because they have spent their live in an activity they probably will not do again, at least not in a competitive way. Furthermore, it is also remarkable the age athletes retire because in common works, retirement arrives when people are around 60 but for athletes this retirement comes so early, when they are no older than 40. That is why this is called the first death of athletes. Nevertheless, there are some option for athletes after their retirement and actually some of them have made more money after their retirement. Options vary a lot since some of them become couches of the sport they practiced before while others invest their time in foundations or studying. This last choice is not that frequent because it is not easy to study after 30 but this option should be taken into account.

Of course there are a lot of professional athlete who have made money during their careers and at the end they do not have to worry about money but this case does not represent the majority of athletes who are retired, the other face of sports never shows what they have to do for supplying their family basic needs. That is why it is recommendable for athletes to identify their passion during their active career, it allows them to decide what they are going to do before walk off the field. But, finding the path best suits for post athletes is not that easy and coaches can play an important role within that process, while they decide what step is next. Maybe athletes think of ideas that are fabulous but so difficult to achieve, and as coaches know their players so well, coach’s advices will clarify athletes’ doubts.  This is a short list of some careers athletes can think of after their retirement.

  1. Business administration:
Some athletes use their names for creating products in some cases related with their sport or in other cases just for using their name as a trade. Therefore, they can take care of their business and pass from thinking as the image to think as entrepreneurs do. With a non-empirical knowledge, they have the bases for creating and expanding their products with ideas they will know if are available or not.

  2. Coaching:
Usually coaches were in the past sport players and they decided to continue within the same field. They study the sport they want to be coach on not from their own practice but from books and analysis other coaches have made. They mix what they experienced as players with theory they acquired from books.

  3. Motivational speaking:
This is a way to show how they overcame adversities. It is a fact a lot of sport players, before becoming stars or icons, they suffered because economic conditions or they lived war since childhood in their mother countries or they had to work so hard to finance their careers before someone recognized their talent. The list will never end up but what they know through their speeches they inspire people not only in the sport field but in general, for living. And even if motivational speaking seems to be easy, this requires people to learn voice and public management in order to catch audience’s attention as much as possible.

  4. TV show hosting:
Nowadays there exist a lot of sport channels and host working in there were sport players in the past. They transmit on live matches and while they analyze each movement public do not realize, they talk about their experiences and compare how sport has evolved during the time. As all host, they have to learn aspects they don’t know but what they have to say is more valuable than what experts who have never been in any competition could say. Both sides are important, theory and experience, but public trust more in ex-players can say and for TV companies rating is what matters.

  5. Modeling:
Companies know a well-known faces are better for promoting products and after retirement, some athletes continue being fit, hence they take advantage of their beauty and work as models for famous trades. Even if this field is made for young people especially, athletes catch public’s attention because they are recognizable not only for trades clients but for sports fans. In other words, people who do not care about fashion world will be more attentive when a sport star is the image of any product. Trades found this strategy very useful for improving their public.
